As signs of aging begin to appear, the disparity between your mental picture of youself and the image in the mirror can be pronounced, even disturbing. The face lift, rhytidectomy, is among the earliest aesthetic procedures to gain widespread popularity. A face lift affects the lower two-thirds of the face and the neck; it is an indispensable component of facial rejuvenation and can seem to subtract years from a your appearance. Additional procedures are commonly necessary, such as treatment of the forehead and eyelid areas, to achieve optimal rejuvenation of the face.
A face lift is not a tightening procedure but rather a restoration. It involves not only getting rid of excess skin but also redistributing soft tissues to a more youthful position.
When I perform a face lift, I reposition the underlying tissues, tighten neck muscles, and use liposuction to contour the jawline. I’ve seen patients who have gone somewhere else and had one of the ‘quickie’ procedures. Invariably, they just aren’t happy with the results. The face lift technique that I use takes time, but the results are excellent and long-lasting.
The neck is another area that shows distinct signs of aging that can be improved with a face lift. During the past 10 to 15 years, so much emphasis has been placed on rejuvenating the mid face and cheek areas that the jaw and neck are often ignored, A smooth jawline and a nice angle between the neck and chin are more noticeable, even at conversational distance, than are some of the more subtle changes after extensive mid face surgery.
Most facelift procedures may take three to five hours and might have side effects such as temporary swelling, bruising, numbness and tightness. However, most patients report very little pain and only minor discomfort. These risks will be fully discussed with you prior to your consent. It is important that you address all your questions directly with Dr. Fodor before surgery.
The consultation is a time for you and the surgeon to get to know and feel comfortable with each other. You should feel completely confident that the consulting surgeon is fully qualified. If you haven’t researched whether the surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, perhaps you should do so now. Dr. Peter B. Fodor, M.D., F.A.C.S. is an internationally recognized aesthetic plastic surgeon, double board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Fodor will need to determine if you are a suitable candidate for face lift surgery and will want to review your entire medical history, including any medications you may currently be taking. Many factors, such as sun exposure, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, stress, and physical illness, as well as genetics, can cause more pronounced effects of aging in some people. Although the most common age at which people have a face lift is in the 50 to 65-year range, no two people are exactly alike or age in precisely the same fashion. Some individuals as young as 40 may be good candidates for a face lift, and some in their 80s may benefit from the procedure — which may, in fact, be their second or third lift.
